LGBTQ Commission Welcomes Two New Commissioners
On November 3rd, 2015 the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors appointed two commissioners to the LGBTQ Commission— Teri Shugart and Craig Wiesner. The LGBTQ Commission welcomes its two new members and looks forward working with them to serve the LGBTQ communities of San Mateo County.
Commissioner Teri Shugart is a practicing attorney and long-time educator on the issues of gender and sexual orientation harassment in schools and in the workplace. She has previously served as the Co-Chair and Legislative Chair of Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network (GLSEN) Peninsula/South Bay chapter and has testified before the California State Board of Education and California Senate Select Committee on School Safety. Teri is the mother of Carly, a preschool teacher in Palo Alto; Mitchell, a performing drag queen (as Laundra Tyme) in San Francisco; and Arely, a basketball playing fourth grader. She lives in San Carlos with Arely, husband Jim, and Bailey the dog.
Commissioner Craig Wiesner is co-founder of Reach and Teach, a shop in San Mateo dedicated to peacemaking, sustainable living, and inclusion that offers books, toys and fair-trade gifts from around the corner and around the world. He is a graduate of the University of San Francisco with a degree in Organizational Behavior and Adult Learning and a decorated veteran of United States Air Force. Craig has been deeply involved in social and economic justice issues and the peace movement for the last 25 years. He is married to his long-time partner, Derrick Kikuchi, with whom he shares his life, business, and dog Holly.
